City Sanctuary fledgling leaves the nest
Our long time Community Ranger and communications expert, Zac Martin, will soon take flight on a new adventure working with the Dunedin City Baptist Church and studying part-time at Otago University. Project Manager, Catherine reflects on Zac’s contribution across the breadth of the City Sanctuary project over the past four years.
”It seems like not that long ago that we had Zac join us to help with one of our original projects – the trapping pilot in North Dunedin, 2021.
Zac eagerly jumped on board to help deliver what was not the easiest project. Not only did he do this while continuing to smile, but he made our City Sanctuary communications into what you see today. I thought surely, we would have scared off Zac after the months of battling rats in battered flats but Zac believed in the wider kaupapa of Predator Free and the mahi we were trying to achieve in the City. His work focus changed to working with volunteers and managing reserve traplines while continuing with our excellent comms. Zac will leave a legacy. According to Trap.NZ he’s installed 594 traps and removed 1878 predators and I am sure there are many more unbrowsed roses, native plants and happy birdlife thanks to Zac’s work.
All the best to Zac for his next adventure. He will be staying in Dunedin and informs me he’ll be donning a City Sanctuary vest as a volunteer!”
Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu. Adorn the bird with feathers so it may soar.
Fly high Zac! Go well!
